Meet Andrea

Andrea holds a Masters of Acupuncture from the Maryland University of Integrative Health (formerly The Tai Sophia Institute) and a Bachelors degree in Integrative Studies with a focus in art and psychology from Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College). After exploring a myriad of professions after college- it was her life long passion for helping people that lead her to explore acupuncture as a career, and her background in art and psychology provides her a perfect foundation to do so (as acupuncture is very much a creative science). Andrea comes from a long line of healers and she is excited to be the first holistic practitioner in her family. She is a lover of people, animals and life in general and can’t wait to share her passion for wellness with others.

Acupuncture Services

The following is a list of services commonly offered by A Brand of Acupuncture. Andrea’s office is located in Towson, Maryland just inside the beltway on Dulaney Valley Road. She also provides animal acupuncture offsite.

Performed In Towson Office

Acupuncture
The use of hair-fine pins (sometimes called needles) at specific locations on the body called acu-points. These points help to influence the body/mind/spirit back to a place closer to homeostasis. Each point has a function (sometimes more than one) and the points used are chosen based on the symptoms an individual wishes to support.
Moxibustion

The use of dried mugwort (often called moxa) either on a pin, directly on the skin (but removed before its hot), or used in stick form (almost looks like a cigar) held closely to but indirectly on the body. The moxa is burned to create heat and warm a point or a region of the body to help resolve symptoms. It produces a very grounding aroma which supports relaxation and ease.

Cupping
The use of glass cups which create suction on the skin. They are placed in areas of the body where there may be stagnation. They may be static or gliding. The suction creates movement in the muscle fascia, loosens muscles and can help detoxify the body. (Mild bruising may occur with this therapy)
Gua Sha

Gentle scraping across the skin with a rounded edge massage tool. Gua sha increases circulation in areas where a pain or stiffness is present. Through increased circulation we hope to reduce the inflammation which could be causing the symptom. (Mild bruising may occur with this technique)

Tui na

A therapeutic form of body work which literally means to ‘pinch and pull.’ The name refers to the technique used with pressure varying from gentle stroking to deeper tissue work. This technique is effective to help resolve musculoskeletal symptoms as well as sports injury, soft tissue issues and a range of other pain/soreness based symptoms.

Offsite Animal Acupuncture Available

Andrea treats horses, dogs, and cats with acupuncture. Many people seek treatment for their animals for the same reasons that a human may seek acupuncture; pain, anxiety, digestive troubles, allergies, general well-being etc. Generally, animals of all varieties really enjoy their session!

What is Acupuncture?

I am so glad you asked! In the simplest terms (to a complicated question to which there are many answers…), acupuncture is a 2 + thousand year old form of nature-based healing that involves placing sterile, hair fine needles into the skin to reach specific points on the body to stimulate the immune system and natural healing responses, thereby relieving (physical, emotional, psychological even spiritual) symptoms. Each point on the body (and there are hundreds of them!) has specific functions and relationships to one another and the body as a whole. The points lie along what are known as meridians, and qi (or energy is another way of thinking about it) flows through the meridians to all the points. And the basic principal as to how it all works is that when we are experiencing a symptom of any sort on any level this is our body’s way of letting us know there is an imbalance in the system, or a blockage in the meridian (you can think of it like a hose- if there is a kink in the hose there may be a build up of water somewhere or none at all elsewhere…). Once the imbalance is diagnosed, specific points and combinations can be used to help remind the body of its natural healing tendencies and rhythms and thus the relief of symptoms.

“Accupuncture has become a staple in my tool shed for self-care and self-love. Over the years, I have learned many things from learning to relax to knowledge of my body by simply listening. Since I have been seeing Andrea, I have completed powerlifting competitIons as well as every day life. Her knowledge of the body is truly a gift and she not only assists you in your body’s lifelong journey but she educates you in the many ways you can further love your body! Andrea is a treasure, and I truly appreciate all of her support through accupuncture!”

Andrea has been treating my dog, Charlie, for several years now and I can’t recommend her highly enough. Not only does the acupuncture help my elder pup keep a pep in his step, her intuitiveness with his conditions are spot on. There is a noticeable difference before and after treatment, and he loves each and every one!

“When I started acupuncture, I was focused on finding an alternative method for treating lingering back pain. Through Andrea’s guidance, I learned more about how acupuncture works and other ways it could be used in my life. It’s now part of my ongoing self-care routine with special treatments for stress, anxiety, insomnia, and general balance in life. I don’t know where I’d be without Andrea!”

“I have been receiving Acupuncture from Andrea Brand for 5 years now. I remember wanting to try Acupuncture in 2015 but like many was intrigued but never made an appointment. Just to give a quick history. I have a couple old sports injuries, especially my shoulder where I have had 4 major surgeries. A friend told me to try an Acupuncture treatment from Andrea Brand and the rest is history. My appointment was amazing and so has every other Acupuncture treatment since my first one. Andrea is a true professional and understands how to use Acupuncture as an amazing healing tool. My shoulder has not felt this good in over 20 years and I don’t have to take Advil or anti inflammatory medicine anymore. Further in everyone’s busy worlds it’s great for folks to get an Acupuncture reset from Andrea Brand. These treatments help your stress level and enhance your overall well being. Give Andrea Brand Acupuncture a try…it truly will be a positive addition to your life!”

The work Andrea has done with my horse has been amazing. Her knowledge and calming demeanor put my horse at ease right away. When she met my mare Emma, we had just discovered her neck arthritis and dealing with very severe pain and cribbing. Since her treatments with Andrea my mare is calmer, happier, she is so much more comfortable under saddle, and even her cribbing has lessened. My horse is 21 with severe arthritis. I would trust no one more with care than Andrea Brand. She has become a dear friend and an essential part of my horse’s care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I get acupuncture?

Because acupuncture is a holistic practice it takes into consideration the whole person- meaning mind, body and spirit. This means that acupuncture can be used to treat symptoms on any level. Here are some reasons people come to acupuncture: pain management without the use of drugs, stress relief and relaxation support, detox and addiction support, quicker healing time post-injury, or pre-,and post-, operatively, sleep support, digestive issues, depression/anxiety, fertility support, symptom relief from chemotherapy, strengthen the immune system, complimentary treatment for diseases being treated with traditional medicine, and many more. Acupuncture is all about nudging us closer to our center/place of balance – is there an area in your life where you’d like to find that place? If so- that’s a reason to get acupuncture 🙂

What if I don't believe in it?

My dog doesn’t believe (or not believe) in acupuncture either, and there is no placebo effect because I can’t tell him that a nice lady is going to place little needles in him and he’ll feel better, and yet it works amazingly well for him! And, most of the skeptics I have met become immediate supporters once giving it a go. My best advice on this one is if you are a skeptic and curious about it, give it a try.

How much does it cost?

I do not accept insurance, but I can code for reimbursement. Call for pricing.

Does acupuncture hurt?

This is a very common question and the best answer I have heard so far is, “acupuncture is sensational!” – Often there is a sensation when an acupuncture needle is inserted but it is not a painful one. Some things my patients have reported are; “it feels like a swirling movement”, “…kind of tickles on the inside where the point is”, and my youngest patient says “it feels like cat whiskers”. So there are many possibilities to what you may feel with acupuncture, and in my experience “hurts” is not a commonly used descriptive word. Keeping in mind that there are points all over the body and some may be more sensitive than others but the needles we use for acupuncture are solid and hair fine- not like the hollow ones used to draw blood or administer meds.

How often do I come to treatment?

I recommend that once you begin treatment you come weekly for 4 weeks. This allows us to establish your individual baseline. After 4 weeks it depends on how you are feeling – some people come more than once a week and others come once every 3 weeks or even seasonally.

Can I be treated if I am pregnant?

Acupuncture is wonderful for pregnant women. It is a safe and highly supportive modality that offers pregnant women a non-chemical, non invasive form of therapy. Acupuncture has been reported to be supportive in helping with many pregnancy-related symptoms such as ; nausea, fatigue, digestive troubles, hormonal mood shifts etc.

What can I expect after treatment?

Since acupuncture is a very personal process, it is hard to say exactly what to expect because everyone really is different. In general terms most people report that immediately following a treatment, aside from specific symptom relief, they feel relaxed, peaceful, sleepy, clear-headed etc. A day or even two later you may experience more shifts- since acupuncture works on all levels these shifts can be physical or emotional or both. And again this is different for everyone, it is important to keep in mind that this is a building medicine- meaning each treatment builds and informs the next and so often people will report that the most remarkable shifts take place over time.

Can acupuncture take the place of my regular primary care physician?

Acupuncture is a wonderful modality to incorporate into your self-care and wellness routine. And while it is powerful and often fills in the gaps where traditional medicine can not, acupuncture should not take the place of your regular doctor. As a practitioner, with consent, I can communicate with your doctor if that is important to you. It is your doctor’s role to diagnose and treat illness/disease and acupuncture can help support healing and assist in symptom relief.

What is a NADA detox specialist?

As part of my practice I treat individuals in the process of addiction recovery. NADA describes a particular point protocol which has been proven to be highly effective in reducing cravings and lowering withdrawal symptoms, as well as supporting an overall sense of well being. As a NADA Detox Specialist, I am certified to administer this protocol and support people in their recovery process.
